The LADAR®Tracker PDF Print E-mail

The LADAR®Tracker is a device that detects movements of your eye and helps direct the laser beam accurately onto your cornea. The challenge in laser eye surgery is that your eyes are never perfectly still; they can move many times per second without you being aware of it.

The LADARVision® is the only laser with a laser radar eye tracking system, incorporating technology which was developed by NASA. Other trackers mostly utilise slower, video based technology. The LADARVision® laser confirms the position of your eye 4000 times per second. This enables the patient to relax during surgery as it is not so critical they freeze their gaze.

The LADAR®Tracker in the LADARVision® is the only tracker that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the only tracker that has been approved to improve corneal shaping.

Not only is the speed 15 times faster than its closest competitor but its effective lag time is less than one millisecond whereas most others are around 10 msec. The eye can move a long way during this time.

The tracker also allows an exact placement of the treatment where it is intended and does not rely on the surgeon's estimate. This process is called registration and is lacking in most other systems. Even with all of these performance deficiencies it must be said that most laser systems give acceptable results particularly in lower levels of short-sightedness. Dr Wolfe believes in theory and in practice we are providing a treatment that provides a patient with the very best chance of achieving or exceeding their goal.
