The story of ICLs™

ICL was first developed in the 1980s by a Russian ophthalmologist Dr Fyodorov. The first ICLs made by STAAR Surgical (Monrovia Calif. USA) were implanted in human eyes in Europe in 1993 and underwent full clinical evaluation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 1997, the FDA approved the first implants under an Investigational Device Exemption and in 2004 it received full FDA registration and approval. The ICL procedure is now performed by select Australian ophthalmologists for patients with glasses or contact lenses of a high prescription.
