Monovision
Laser Eye Surgery
What is Monovision?
Monovision is a treatment option for people aged 45 and over who experience age-related changes in near vision (presbyopia). This approach involves correcting one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision, so that both eyes together can support a broader range of focus.
Presbyopia is a common, natural change that makes it harder to focus on nearby objects or text, typically beginning from the mid-40s onward. Monovision can reduce reliance on reading glasses for some people, though it may not suit everyone.
Your suitability for monovision will be assessed at your consultation, where we can demonstrate the effect and discuss whether this approach fits your visual needs and lifestyle
Successfully adapting to monovision depends on the brain’s ability to adjust to seeing differently with each eye. Some people adapt within days or weeks, while others may find it less comfortable.
Our optometrists can fit you with trial contact lenses to simulate the effects of monovision before considering a procedure. This trial helps you experience what monovision is like and decide if it suits your needs.
Monovision can be achieved through Customised LASIK, PRK, or certain lens-based procedures. At your consultation, we will assess your vision and discuss which options may be appropriate for you.

Learn more about Monovision
Monovision is typically recommended for patients aged 45 years and over, who are tired of wearing reading glasses.
During the monovision procedure, your eye surgeon adjusts one eye for long-distance vision, and the other eye for close-up focus – depending on your individual needs.
Monovision can be achieved in combination with any of the following eye surgery procedures:
Our optometrists can help you trial monovision by fitting you with contact lenses to mimic the results of monovision. By trialling it first, you will see if monovision is right for you.
All surgical and medical procedures carry some risk of complications. During your consultation at Vista Eyes, we will discuss the potential risks and side effects of laser eye surgery, as well as the steps taken to minimise these risks. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions about the procedure, your individual risk factors, and how we manage your care before and after surgery.
